“The first thing anybody tells you about this business is to say what makes you unique and different, but I couldn’t, and the very idea of it never sat well with me. After much deliberation, I finally realized why - because I’m not unique or different. I’m exactly like you, and I love that. We each have a unique filter through which we interpret the world, and with this filter in place, I write stories and songs.

You might find them surprising or intriguing, even confronting. You may relate or you may not. They may make you laugh and sometimes, even cry. You may or may not understand what I’m trying to say, and you may not understand me. However, rest assured, once we get past the filters, at our core, we are wonderfully and beautifully the same.

Truer words have seldom been spoken. After an ambitious, and sometimes enervating, creative odyssey, the Melbourne, Australia-based artist has emerged with a trilogy of what she calls a  “six headed monster,” a trilogy of interconnected album and books. These will be available as standalone purchases – CDs and books sold separately – and as bundle packages, with the music integrated into the audiobook. 

The playfully titled Deep Dark Down & Blue is rife with intriguing layers. The album’s weighty title belies the invigorating and upbeat nature of its songs. Connie’s debut manages to be both accessible and sophisticated while gracefully traversing folk, pop, and jazz with authenticity and ingenuity. Each of the track’s carefully crafted lyrics offer a profound, poignant, and poetic messages without detracting from the album’s overall lilting feeling. The ten-song album represents a creative collaboration between Connie and one of Australia’s premier jazz artists, Mark Fitzgibbon.

This three-part release series represents a milestone moment for Connie, as these will be her first commercial offerings. The first installment includes its companion novel, The Perfect Tear, a fantastical young adult fairytale with an empowering message. Tying these two together are Connie’s literate flair, and her gift for imaginative overarching themes.

Previously, Connie has placed original songs in globally syndicated Australian television shows. Her jazz ensemble, The Connie Lansberg Quartet, has become a mainstay of the Melbourne jazz scene. At her creative core, Connie is a storyteller. Her songs brim with elegantly expressive melodies, and poetic lyrics. She is inspired as much by Shakespeare as she is by Simon & Garfunkel, Carole King and Patsy Kline.

“Reading and music have always been the most important things to me, and what ties these together in my own work are well-chosen words. The difference is just in the word count,” she says with a good-natured laugh.

Highlights on Deep Dark Down & Blue include the breezy title track, the impressionistic “Better Things,” and the smoky and revelatory “Still.” “Deep Dark Down & Blue” is sweetly cathartic, contrasting crystalline melodies with richly emotive sentiments. The elegantly essential “Better Things” is a subtle masterwork with a stately improvisational flight courtesy of Mark Fitzgibbon and sage lyrics. “That song is a gentle reminder to not wait too long, especially for the wrong reasons. Nothing is ever going to be perfect.

The album’s closing track, “Still,” is a spiritual centering composition with a touch of wry wit and some of Connie’s finest turns of phrases.

Pondering her artistic adventure, and the six-headed monster it spawned, she says: “I know it seems like a lot of hats to wear, but, for me, everything come down to story. There are so many ways to tell a great story and I want to be able to tell a story in any medium. That’s the challenge I set for myself.”
